"The NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies is THE center for the study and dissemination of knowledge of the history of the Netherlands (including the Dutch East Indies) during the Second World War. The Institute was founded on 8 May 1945, shortly after liberation , in recognition of the great historical importance of the occupation period. On 1 January 1999 the NIOD became part of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (KNAW). Recently, the Institute redefined the scope of its mission, broadening its research area to include the history of both world wars and the long-term effects on society."
